REGIMENTAL NEWS
Regimental Association
At one time in my life the only event that I had to plan for was Valentine's Day, since coming into my present post I seem to have overlooked Valentine's Day and become more focussed on Regimental events in February.
Kimberley Day
The annual parade in Avenham Park, was well attended given the weather conditions on the day. Following the parade a tree was dedicated to the Loyals in Fulwood Barracks. At the conclusion of the formal events 60 or so Association members enjoyed a Roast Lunch in the WOs and Sgts Mess Fulwood Bks
Glendower Weekend
Sadly this year, the Glendower weekend that many Association members have become accustomed too, was the last one in its current format. The Manchester and Salford Branch planned and executed a great weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the dinner night on the Saturday evening, and it was a great night all thanks to Joan and her trusty band of ladies for the planning, preparation and hard work that they had put into it.
I only hope that next year we will have something similar to attend.
Accrington Pals
The annual Accrington Pals service this year reverted to St Johns Church in Accrington, The very Church at which 96 years ago the Pals attended a Valedictory church service before they marched to the Train Station, to board the train that would take them on their initial stage of their journey to the Somme.
The service was attended by the High Sherriff of Lancashire and civic dignitaries from across the county, along with uniformed organisations and many family and friends of the Regiment. This is first time that I have attended the service in St John's and one that I will not forget, it was memorable and moving.
Welfare Matters
I have received news about Lt Col Joe Cetre MC, Col Cetre’s name will be familiar to many of our East Lancashire Officers and Soldiers, as he had served with the East Lancs alongside Col Irvine Andrews VC, when Col Andrews was involved with the action that would later earn him the VC. I am please to say that although Col Cetre’s is not getting any younger, he is well, that said at this current time he is receiving treatment for an abscess on his foot. Should anyone wish to contact Col Cetre, I have his details at RHQ and will provide them on request.
Freedom Parade Ribble Valley
Ribble Valley Council and the Citizens of the Borough have granted the Freedom of Ribble Valley on The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and on Thursday 10th March 2011 the 1st Bn will exercise the Freedom of The Regiment by Marching through Clitheroe, with drums beating, bayonets fixed and Colours Flying, commencing at 1045hrs. The route for the parade is Castle gate, Castle Street and York Street, the parade will halt in the old Market Square, the Officers and Soldiers on Parade will be reviewed by the Mayor.
